Surf on the Glencairn rocks

Find Your Week

The Active Explorer

I want to get out there and do it.

Seven nights for people who holiday by moving.

Written for surfers, hikers, riders and cyclists who want a base with a hot shower, a washing machine, a place to hang wetsuits and dry boots, and the Peninsula's coast, mountain and sea within twenty minutes in every direction.

The week is built as a sequence: water, mountain, road, water again, with a rest day in the middle because the body asks for one. Every day has a quieter option, for the morning after the big one.

Day by day

Water, mountain, road. Then again.

Day1

Arrive and get in

Salt water before dinner.

Unpack, then the tidal pool or the sea at Glencairn to shake off the flight. Check the surf and wind forecast for the week over dinner at home and rearrange the days accordingly. Early night.

Turn it up: the coast walk to Fish Hoek at pace.

Day2

Surf

Muizenberg on a good day is hard to beat.

Morning surf at Muizenberg, the Cape's most forgiving break for a first day and its most fun on a clean one. Board and wetsuit hire on the beachfront. Lunch there, afternoon recovery at the tidal pool.

Turn it up: a second session at Long Beach if the swell is right.

Day3

Silvermine to the ridge

The mountain the Peninsula hides.

Silvermine early: the ridge route with views over both coasts, three to four hours, or a mountain bike on the trails. Lunch in Kalk Bay, afternoon off.

Turn it up: link the ridge down to Kalk Bay on foot and taxi home.

Day4

Kayak to the penguins

Two hours on the water, then the rest of the day.

A guided kayak from Simon's Town along the coast to Boulders and back, morning light, penguins at eye level. Lunch in town. Afternoon: rest, or the tidal pool, or Boulders on foot.

Turn it up: snorkelling in the kelp off the Simon's Town coast in the afternoon.

Day5

Rest day

The one that makes the others possible.

A massage at the Residence, a swim, a slow lunch in Kalk Bay, the reading room. Stretch. Eat well. Go to bed early.

Turn it up: a gentle Noordhoek beach walk, nothing more.

Day6

Chapman's Peak

The climb, the view, the descent.

Chapman's Peak by bicycle from Noordhoek: one of the great road climbs anywhere, then down to Hout Bay for lunch and back over the top. Or a beach ride on Noordhoek sands at sunrise, then the drive. Home to hang everything up.

Turn it up: add the Noordhoek beach ride before the climb.

Day7

The brave one, or the pool

Finish big or finish easy.

Shark cage diving or a marine adventure from Simon's Town for those who want to end on adrenaline, weather permitting. For everyone else, a last surf or a last swim, and a long dinner at home.

Turn it up: both: the boat at dawn, the surf at dusk.

Room downstairs for bikes, boards and wetsuits. Activities are ideas, not bookings. When you enquire we put you in touch with the local operators we trust. Some experiences depend on weather and season.
